Meditating Lobster

When I was asked to create a Lobster for an upcoming “Critters” exhibition, I knew it could not be just a Lobster. Since most of my work revolves around the interconnection of all things, why not have a Lobster contemplating its existence?

Size: 15” x 12” x 12”

Medium: Lobster: Basswood, Tung oil, oil paint. Base: poplar, Tung oil, oil paint

Price: $4,800

I don’t usually keep track of my time when carving, but I made an exception out of curiosity. Sixty hours went into the Lobster…all those little legs. OY. The base was an additional 6 hours.

The claws rest in a Mudra posture. The maxillipeds—the appendages that deliver food to the lobster’s mouth—take on the evocative image of hands folded in prayer.

The lobster’s mouth forms an OM — the cosmic sound of the Infinant, reverberating like an ancient, unending pulse through water, land, salt and shell.
